John Mellberg, 20, is set to return from an ACL injury after moving from IF Brommapojkarna to Red Bull Salzburg in the summer of 2023. The club has no plans to loan out the central defender.
Mellberg returns from injury
Mellberg, son of the legendary Swedish national team defender Olof Mellberg, missed last season due to a knee injury that struck him last year. After an intensive rehabilitation, he is now back in shape and ready to make his debut in the Austrian league.
Contract extended to 2029
In November, Red Bull Salzburg chose to extend Mellberg’s contract until the summer of 2029. This extension shows the club’s confidence in the young centre-back and their desire to let him grow within their system.
No loan planned
Sporting director Marcus Mann tells Sportbladet that a loan is not on the table. Mann says: "No, we want him to stay in Salzburg and we are convinced that he will build his career here. Then he will show his qualities."
Mann explains
Mann continues: "We play every third day right now, so it’s hard to make many changes between matches. But I am convinced that he will get his minutes within a few weeks. Then he will show his qualities."
Mellberg’s future
Mellberg has so far sat on the bench at the start of the season but has not yet played. With the intense match schedule that Red Bull Salzburg has, it is however likely that he will soon get his first start. The club is determined to let him develop and contribute to both the club’s and his own career.
Summary
Red Bull Salzburg has clearly shown that they want to keep Mellberg in the club. With a long contract, no loan plan, and a clear strategy to give him playing time, the future looks bright for the young centre-back who will continue his development in one of Europe’s most prominent clubs.
